“The Island” 14th May 2007

Sri Lanka Shipper’s Council has been agitating against the arbitrary practice of imposing Terminal Handling Charges by shipping lines which operate through Colombo Port. The issue has not only affected Sri Lanka, but a host of other Asian countries.

Shippers complain that they have been asked to pay various new fees by shipping lines, freight forwarders and others in the supply chain critically affecting the country’s export industry.

Sri Lanka Shipper’s Council Chairman Jayanath Perera recently told the media that various governments in the region are taking measures to protect their exporters from this kind of exploitation by shipping lines.

He called upon the government to set up a body to regulate shipping activity before this decade old practice by shipping lines kill the country’s export sector.
